I'm sorry, I think I'm going to have to put this idea aside since there doesn't seem to be much general interest...I may come back to it later.

How was your visit to the Lodging House? Lovely, thanks.
Any questions you'd like to see answered? Updating The Dusk Descending any time soon?

This is an incredible site -- I am completely amazed by how much hunting you must have done for all this info. You really care about accuracy and obviously have a passion for this corner of history. You have the most amazing fanfic ever written, and, summed up, you rock my socks kid!

Aw, thanks. There's more to come, so stay tuned for updates.

Updating The Dusk Descending any time soon?

I hope so. I pulled the last chapter (XXII) for personal reasons unrelated to the fic; I'll try to get that back up soon, and then if all goes well, another chapter. And since I never get to reply to your reviews, I'll take this opportunity now to thank you for always being so supportive about TDD.

Love this site!

How was your visit to the Lodging House? I love it! It's very accurate historically speaking. And I've learned things I didn't know, and now I feel smarter. ;)
Any questions you'd like to see answered? Did girls ever dress in mens clothes? I didn't think they did but so many people have sad that they did.

Hi, glad you enjoyed your visit to No. 9.

Did girls ever dress in mens clothes? I didn't think they did but so many people have sad that they did.

Well, in the latest update to this site there's an entry about girls at the DSLH, involving 1) a girl who dressed as a boy and got away with it for nearly two weeks and 2) several girls who dressed as boys so they could get into the Thanksgiving dinner (but were caught before they could enter). The rules were very strict about that sort of thing. See the "Rules" page for the full stories.

Does that answer your question? If not, just let me know.

Any questions you'd like to see answered?
It appears my Great-Grandfather may have been an orphan. Born in 1857 in up-state NY he appeared on the 1860 census as an orphan and, we think, at the NBLH with O'Conner on the 1870 census. We need to try and track him from LaFargeville to the city. This may get interesting if we find an ancestral tie to the house.

this link isnt working

The dude room.

A small illustration of one of the private ten-cent beds which were located in what was known to the boys as the "dude" room. There isn't much to see here, but you can get an idea of how the beds were curtained off. The date and newspaper source are unknown, but given the dates of the other articles on the scrapbook page on which this clipping was found, it is likely from the 1890s.

Newsies fan, history buff, both, neither? Both. I’m a sucker for just about anything “Newsies,” but learning the facts of the Lodging House, the boys and the city is fascinating. I can’t get enough of their surroundings, and the little side stories such as “Narrow Mike” and his unusual selling gimmick and the "Walking Mudgutter" bring the real newsboys to life.

I can’t say that I have a favorite section at this site. I love it all, but the photographs and the maps you’ve provided are priceless. The visuals add to my appreciation of “Newsies,” my great affection of the city and, strangely enough, have lead to my discovering some new information on my own family’s history.
Dinner or just a bed? Well, I had a good day sellin’ so if they aren’t already taken, I think I’ll try one of those private beds in the dude room.
How was your visit to the Lodging House? I’ve had plenty of visits to the LH and each time is better than the one before.
Any questions you'd like to see answered? None that I can think of. You’ve already provided more information than I thought possible.

I know what you mean about the anecdotes really bringing the history to life--I can read any number of articles about facts and figures and suddenly I'll come across a story's a wonderful reminder of the human side of things.

I'm also glad to hear you've found out more on your own family history. How exciting. Thanks for visiting!

Any questions you'd like to see answered? I have heard many things about the Brooklyn newsies having the 'docks' yet looking at the picture it seems as though any kind of docks would be far away. Could you email me what you have found out about the toughest newsies and their famous docks.
