How was your visit to the Lodging House? very nice thank you
Any questions you'd like to see answered? Did you do just do research online, or were there books. If you used books, which ones?
no subject
Date: 2006-06-26 06:19 am (UTC)Some of both. Mostly newspaper articles. One thing I didn't look at was other fansites, since that's their hard work. It'd take too long to list everything, but I'll put up the major sources when I update the site.

How was your visit to the Lodging House? Great! All the information you have here is so fascinating!
Any questions you'd like to see answered? Is there a way of finding out which of the newsboys we know and love actually stayed at this particular LH?
no subject
Date: 2006-06-26 06:22 am (UTC)Oh, neat question. I know about some of them, although historically speaking they're off by a few years in the movie. When I put up the page about newsboy names...or maybe when I update that page later...I'll mark the ones I know were at the DSLH.
Awesome!

Date: 2006-07-08 06:32 pm (UTC)But one quick question, where you said that "carrying the banner" meant to sleep outside, did you get that off the DVD or was in backed up from other research? Cause I'm still convinced it was an error on the dvd, seeing as a banner is a newspaper and it would make sense to carry a newspaper- sell it, but I was just curious if you had any other sources besides the DVD or sites that referenced the DVD.
no subject
Date: 2006-07-08 06:35 pm (UTC)As for "carrying the banner," it's real. It's given in Helen Campbell's book (see the main site page). Many of the historical newsboy names also come from her book; the filmmakers apparently used her as a resource quite a bit.
Love the site :)

Newsies fan, history buff, both, neither? More on the newsies side of both
Dinner or just a bed? Both would be fabulous ;)
How was your visit to the Lodging House? Awesome- I'm excited for more stuff to come!
Any questions you'd like to see answered? I think it'd be great if there was more info on the real newsies, a like "See who's staying here" type of thing, maybe a little bio on them? That may be a tall order, but the site is awesome! Keep on the good work!
Re: Love the site :)
Date: 2006-07-10 08:10 pm (UTC)That would be cool, but aside from what's already on the site, there isn't much more info on individual newsboys at the DSLH. For many of the boys listed on the site, it's not even recorded if they stayed at the DSLH; all that's known is that they were newsboys, and newsboys slept in a variety of places...at the DSLH, at other LHs, on the streets, at their family's home.
Of course if I do find something later on, you guys will be the first to see it!

How was your visit to the Lodging House? Awesome! So much wonderful information! Although, bits of it make me confused in my fic writing... do I stick with movie canon or real life canon?
Any questions you'd like to see answered? I'm going to copy mx. and ask... be my friend?

Any questions you'd like to see answered? Updating The Dusk Descending any time soon?
This is an incredible site -- I am completely amazed by how much hunting you must have done for all this info. You really care about accuracy and obviously have a passion for this corner of history. You have the most amazing fanfic ever written, and, summed up, you rock my socks kid!
Re: Amazing site dhenson!
Date: 2006-09-25 02:04 am (UTC)Updating The Dusk Descending any time soon?
I hope so. I pulled the last chapter (XXII) for personal reasons unrelated to the fic; I'll try to get that back up soon, and then if all goes well, another chapter. And since I never get to reply to your reviews, I'll take this opportunity now to thank you for always being so supportive about TDD.
Love this site!

Any questions you'd like to see answered? Did girls ever dress in mens clothes? I didn't think they did but so many people have sad that they did.

Date: 2007-04-20 04:23 pm (UTC)Did girls ever dress in mens clothes? I didn't think they did but so many people have sad that they did.
Well, in the latest update to this site there's an entry about girls at the DSLH, involving 1) a girl who dressed as a boy and got away with it for nearly two weeks and 2) several girls who dressed as boys so they could get into the Thanksgiving dinner (but were caught before they could enter). The rules were very strict about that sort of thing. See the "Rules" page for the full stories.
Does that answer your question? If not, just let me know.
Sweet

How was your visit to the Lodging House? interesting
Any questions you'd like to see answered?
It appears my Great-Grandfather may have been an orphan. Born in 1857 in up-state NY he appeared on the 1860 census as an orphan and, we think, at the NBLH with O'Conner on the 1870 census. We need to try and track him from LaFargeville to the city. This may get interesting if we find an ancestral tie to the house.
