Yes, this is the No. 9 Duane Street Register, because I haven't yet found a guestbook script I like.

The dude room.
A small illustration of one of the private ten-cent beds which were located in what was known to the boys as the "dude" room. There isn't much to see here, but you can get an idea of how the beds were curtained off. The date and newspaper source are unknown, but given the dates of the other articles on the scrapbook page on which this clipping was found, it is likely from the 1890s.

Newsies fan, history buff, both, neither? Both. I’m a sucker for just about anything “Newsies,” but learning the facts of the Lodging House, the boys and the city is fascinating. I can’t get enough of their surroundings, and the little side stories such as “Narrow Mike” and his unusual selling gimmick and the "Walking Mudgutter" bring the real newsboys to life.
I can’t say that I have a favorite section at this site. I love it all, but the photographs and the maps you’ve provided are priceless. The visuals add to my appreciation of “Newsies,” my great affection of the city and, strangely enough, have lead to my discovering some new information on my own family’s history.
Dinner or just a bed? Well, I had a good day sellin’ so if they aren’t already taken, I think I’ll try one of those private beds in the dude room.
How was your visit to the Lodging House? I’ve had plenty of visits to the LH and each time is better than the one before.
Any questions you'd like to see answered? None that I can think of. You’ve already provided more information than I thought possible.

Dinner or just a bed? Both
How was your visit to the Lodging House? Good
Any questions you'd like to see answered? I have heard many things about the Brooklyn newsies having the 'docks' yet looking at the picture it seems as though any kind of docks would be far away. Could you email me what you have found out about the toughest newsies and their famous docks.

Date: 2012-05-31 04:46 pm (UTC)I am working on a film set in NYC in 1864.
We have a lot of street scenes and I want to fill up
the air with the sound of the news boys.
I have lots of access to the headlines of the day and
I'm hoping you can give me some ideas on how the boys
elaborated on the headlines as they called them out.
How did they pitch them? What was the language?
What did they say to make the headlines for interesting?
Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.
