Inverted Silhouette Bird Cushion.

Ever since I made my first cushion like this, I've continued playing around with the idea of inverted silhouettes.

So here's my latest:

The front side.

Closeups of some of the appliques.

And the reverse side, in softer colors.

Closeup of the reverse side.

The two sides have very similar, but not identical, bird designs.

I'm pretty pleased how it came out, and it made Hot New Projects at Craftster, which is nice! Plus, I can choose which color scheme to display depending on whether I put the cushion on the sofa or bed.

Thanks very much!

Soooo adorable.
I really love the birds. (Then again, I love anything with birds.)
I will have to check that out at Craftster.

Thank you. I love the graceful shapes of birds and I'm thinking I really ought to do more with them!

[identity profile] hardheartache.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
Those are both so cute! I love the colors on the reverse side.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Originally I had different colors planned and I didn't think the ivory would show up against the white, but I really like how it turned out.

I love them!!!!

Thank you!

ooo, i love both of them, but especially the colors in the second one! what a terrific idea.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. The second set of colors is more my usual style, too.

beautiful! very clever pictures

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you!

[identity profile] buenabuena.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
These are beautiful--I *love* the colors.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I did a lot of color-swapping while designing it and I'm glad I settled on these.

Thanks!

[identity profile] nequissime.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'm assuming that was a lot harder than one would think.
The placement would drive me nuts.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, the placement was tricky. I do use fabric glue to keep them from sliding around when I stitch, and I stitch by hand, so I at least I didn't have to worry about trying to keep the pieces in place under a machine.

[identity profile] pterizzidactyl.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
wow, that looks amazing! What did you use to line up the pieces?

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

When I cut out my paper pattern, I preserved the bird + branches as a single piece. Later I used it as a template to lay down the appliques.

[identity profile] lostlain.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
That's adorable! Love it. ^_^

Thank you!

Oooh, that's beautiful! I love the colors!

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Next time I do this, I'm hoping I can find some pale spring green felt, too.

[identity profile] toritoribird.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
That is so pretty~ And the design/idea would look great on a scarf or something too.

[identity profile] buzzboomsplat.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
My first thought was actually tattoo, not scarf. Oh, one track mind.

how beautiful!

I love the soft colors side. Mmm, ice cream colors❤

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! When I picked those colors I thought, does it look too much like ice cream?

And then I thought, well, what's wrong with that?

[identity profile] cakesofbaby.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
Sooo pretty!

Thanks, glad you like!

i can't see the second side. :(

i love the first side though!
such a cool idea.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you gave it another look, the photos have been visible to me the whole time. Possibly just Photobucket being temporarily down. The second side is done in shades of light pink, light brown, and ivory.

I really like that technique. You've broken up the negative space with different colors so it's not so obvious and cookie cutter like.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 05:55 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! I love your observation on the colors.

That's so effective - and I love the dual colour scheme idea. :)

Beautifully done.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 09:33 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! The softer colors are more my usual style, but I thought it would be fun to give myself an alternative.

[identity profile] chunkypeaches.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 03:44 pm (UTC)(link)
lovely. very good idea.

I adore these, just love the negative space creating the main image.I really cannot wait to see more!

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 04:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. It's a bit harder to work with than regular images but I think the results are worth it!

[identity profile] deriana.livejournal.com 2008-12-07 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Lovely!

It's gorgeous! I want to try, but my stitching's not quite as nice as yours

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2008-12-08 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! I'm sure your stitching's just fine and if you do make one, I'd love to see what you come up with. I do all my stitching by hand, which is easier for small pieces like this anyway.
