So I seem to be on a Musketeers kick...
Sep. 10th, 2004 01:23 pmHow come I've never read any Bret Harte before? I quite liked his The Ninety-Nine Guardsmen, which skewers Dumas' Musketeers series, turning the heroic foursome into a bunch of guys who drink like fish and fall into group hugs at every opportunity. He also takes a--wittier, in my opinion--jab at Victor Hugo in Fantine (scroll down). Pretty funny stuff.

So the first show of the new fall season to interest me is Father of the Pride. It's only been two episodes, and I'll be tuning in for the third. It's probably not the sharpest of comedies, but it's quite endearing, with enough bite to balance out the cuteness. And frankly, it's a relief to find a new animated series that doesn't rely on gross-out humor. Not that that can't be funny (see Sealab 2021), but it's a nice change of pace.
Plus, any show that gives us Siegfried and Roy going at each other with makeshift quarterstaffs gets my vote.
