(Back from vacation. If you're in the US, hope you had a happy Thanksgiving!)

All right, everyone and his dog has raved about Band of Brothers for years but I've never been able to bring myself to watch it. (As I've mentioned before, I usually stay away from biopics or, more generally, movies based around recent tragedy/war ("recent" being anything from the 20th century on). They're too removed from reality to be useful sources of fact (I'll watch a doc instead), and not removed from reality enough to be true entertainment.)

But the History Channel is airing Band of Brothers right now, and I was sucked in pretty much from the moment I laid eyes on it. Even if I did start with Part 3. I'm going out and renting the whole thing later today so I can watch it properly from the beginning. I did see ABC's broadcast of Saving Private Ryan earlier this month and though I admit to watching only for Giovanni Ribisi and not getting very wrapped up in the story itself, it probably paved the way for me to try watching Band at all.

TWOP is helping; the recaps are finding just the right balance of snarkiness for the show itself and reverence for the actual events (the recapper's read the original book, which goes a long way towards making the recaps coherent).

I'm particularly surprised by the performance of Damian Lewis, whose American accent is so uncannily flawless that it took me fifteen minutes of staring before I could place him, and even then I had to confirm my guess on IMDB. If I hadn't seen him earlier in The Forsyte Saga, I would never have believed he hails from England.
