What the...?

Since the start of the new year I've had no fewer than three fandoms successively take their place as "primary fandom" in my personal hierarchy. LOTR, then VH, and then J&W/F&L. With the exception of VH, the others are repeat fandoms, having done their time on the back burner before popping up again. That's three fandoms in three months. This is Crazy Fandom Rate for me.

And now, I may have a fourth waiting in the wings. Magnificent 7, which was my primary fandom back in 1998-99 (it lasted a whole year!), has inexplicably starting waving its hands and hollering again. I haven't thought about this fandom in years.

M7 was an interesting fandom for me, as it was the first time I ever became interested in a fandom by reading the fanfic before I had even heard of the show, let alone seen it. Prior to that, I had firmly believed it wasn't possible. Not only because fanfic in the years leading up to that was still not as common online as it is today (meaning you didn't have high chances of running into a fandom's fic unless you knew to look for that fandom to begin with), but also because I didn't think there was any way to get interested in a fandom via the sort of writing that appears in fanfic--that is, writing that doesn't so much set up a universe as simply refers to an existing one--so how could I really "get" the story without "getting" the references? And how would I know if the story was really in character?

Well, of course I couldn't really "get" the stories, nor know how in-character they were. I was just plain interested in the premise, the gist of which I was able to pick up from the stories. I didn't count myself a fan, though, until I'd actually seen some episodes, which turned out to be harder than expected, because it went on hiatus two episodes after I started watching. (Sadly, when it came back from hiatus months later, the quality had dropped sharply.)

Sports Night was the other fandom I first got into via fic, back in 2000. Slash fic, which was an even bigger leap for me. Half the time I don't even see the chemistry in shows I do watch. That I could see the chemistry in the fic alone boggles my mind. There were some great writers in that fandom.

SG1, which I discovered mid-1999, only half-counts because I didn't read whole fics before watching the show; I was lured in by fic fragments and pics of a very pretty Daniel Jackson at Media that year. Yeah, sometimes I'm just that shallow.
