POTC 2 & 3...hmm...
Jan. 24th, 2006 09:59 amWell, it's never too early to start the summer movie previews, I suppose, or at least so the media tells us. I find myself oddly unenthusiastic about the POTC sequels. Don't know if I'm burnt out on Depp, or if the previews just haven't had anything in them that grabs me (they don't), or if I'm just wary of sequel-itis, the same way that my love for Matrix and TPM (a really guilty pleasure in the case of the latter, and mostly due to the presence of a certain pair of Jedi knights) were both burned so badly by their sequels that I still haven't gotten around to seeing the third of each trilogy.
Speaking of which, offhand I can't think of a trilogy-ender that I really and truly liked. ROTK is I think the weakest of the LOTR movie trilogy; the same goes for the Back to the Future movies (good concepts in both, but the execution could have been stronger). I'm not counting Baz Luhrmann's "Red Curtain" trilogy, as those weren't actual sequels. Oh wait, ROTJ was pretty good, despite the Ewoks.
Is it a case of the resolution not living up to the setup? Over-expectation? The filmmakers running out of steam? Something else?
