A Study in Paper #4: They See Us Strollin'

So I promised myself I'd take a break from paper-cutting after this.

But then the new set photos from the Sherlock Holmes film sequel took up residence behind my eyelids and wouldn't go away.

Thumbnail:

Lit from the other side:

Not gonna lie, Robert Downey Jr.'s hair was, like, 90% of the motivation for this cutting.

Done on a 4.8" x 6.8" sheet.

Is it December 2011 yet? Is it December 2011 yet?

Thanks very much!

The most grueling part of making this was having to stare at those pictures for a few hours. Oh my.

This is BEAUTIFUL! Just WOW!

*much like RDJ's hair*

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 06:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

RDJ's hair is truly inspiring.

Oh, wow, I love the raised paper effect! I love your work. I will never get tored of saying that!

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 06:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, thank you!

Getting Watson's scarf to be dimensional was the trickiest part, but I quite like the way it came out.

Gorgeous.

Wow! SO impressive! What a lovely job. You manage to evoke SO MUCH of them in this medium. Bravo!

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
That's such a compliment, thank you! When I do these it's all about trying to get the characters and mood across.

So pretty, and that hair is perfect...mmmmm Love it!

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you! Even before I put pencil to paper I knew just how I wanted that hair. Oh RDJ, why so fabulous?

*squee*

These are great. Also, hey, is this the first fanwork based on the second film? :) Neat.

Well as fantastic as all the others were - THIS IS THE BEST ONE YET!!! See, the excitement is catching.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks very much! I'm trying to push my technique a little more, and working on finer scales--for instance this one is less than half the size of my first one, but has more details.

I can't believe I'm this excited over some set photos, BUT I AM.

Thanks very much!

I can't stop, the Holmes universe is too awesome.

[identity profile] quirkyotaku.livejournal.com 2010-10-21 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoa. This is awesome.

I'm always proud of myself when I don't end up cutting a snowflake in half, so I bow to your abilities.

Well thank you, glad you like!

And snowflakes (http://ldhenson.livejournal.com/tag/snowflakes) can be a great deal of fun, but maybe that's just me :-)

Ok, I thought your others were amazing and I couldn't imagine better. But this, this is...is...phenomenal!!

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much! It took a while to figure out how to cut certain parts enough to allow them to be folded without detaching them entirely, but I like how it all turned out.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-21 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
umm, you don't know me but, wow! for a minute i thought you added some pieces or glued it all together some way. it's all one sheet of paper though? amazinggggg.

ok i just saw your other sherlock/john ones. all i can say is, WOW! you are talented!

This is freakin' amazing. The scarf! The hair! I'm not going to make it 14 whole months.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you!

As they do more filming I'm going to be so torn between my customary need to avoid any and all spoilers and my need to see more of THAT HAIR.

[identity profile] rabidsamfan.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Very cool. I am jealous of your mad papercutting skillz -- well, no, I'm not, because if I tried something like that it would involve lots of bandaids and it's much better that you share.

Do you do these freehand or do you plan them out first?

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 07:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, I'm glad you like it!

I print the image I'm basing it on (here, a combination of pics) very faintly on the back. I don't follow it exactly but it serves as a rough guide for placement of objects. I then lightly sketch the planned cuts. I skipped sketching for #1, but with more details/folding in the later ones I have to plan nearly every line. Watson's coat and scarf in this one were quite the puzzler as certain kinds of folds required very particular cuts. #4 is also less than half the size of #1 so I have to be extra careful with space. Some things however like the scarf fringe in #1 are just freehanded.

Is it weird that his profile is sooo fucking hot without even having a face...plus the hair is soooo good. ^___^

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Thanks!

Robert Downey, Jr.: Capable of doing with a mere profile what most can't do with an entire face.

[identity profile] pandarus.livejournal.com 2010-10-22 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically, I am in awe of your mad skillz. In awe. I've never tried my hand at this, and you've got me itching to try it, but OMG your effortless skill and the apparent ease with which you reduce a complex design to the bare bones so beautifully...

STUNNING.

::applauds::

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2010-10-23 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you very much! I love experimenting with a new image to see what I can pull from it. Best of all I get to stare at my favorite pictures for a few hours in the process :-)

If you feel the urge then certainly give it a try! Are you new to knife-cutting in general, or just to cutting objects/scenes?

I want one to frame in a public place so everyone can see it's brilliance.

Aw, thank you for the lovely comment! This was meant to be a quick project but to my surprise it was second only to cutting John's wool jumper (http://ldhenson.livejournal.com/256422.html). It was worth it though :-)

Beautiful! Lovin' the collars.

And...there are new pictures out from the sequel? I must've been living under a rock or something not not to have known this. *Goes off to look*
