A Study in Paper #4: They See Us Strollin'

So I promised myself I'd take a break from paper-cutting after this.

But then the new set photos from the Sherlock Holmes film sequel took up residence behind my eyelids and wouldn't go away.

Lit from the other side:

Not gonna lie, Robert Downey Jr.'s hair was, like, 90% of the motivation for this cutting.

Done on a 4.8" x 6.8" sheet.

Is it December 2011 yet? Is it December 2011 yet?

Very cool. I am jealous of your mad papercutting skillz -- well, no, I'm not, because if I tried something like that it would involve lots of bandaids and it's much better that you share.

Do you do these freehand or do you plan them out first?

Thank you, I'm glad you like it!

I print the image I'm basing it on (here, a combination of pics) very faintly on the back. I don't follow it exactly but it serves as a rough guide for placement of objects. I then lightly sketch the planned cuts. I skipped sketching for #1, but with more details/folding in the later ones I have to plan nearly every line. Watson's coat and scarf in this one were quite the puzzler as certain kinds of folds required very particular cuts. #4 is also less than half the size of #1 so I have to be extra careful with space. Some things however like the scarf fringe in #1 are just freehanded.
