D'oh! I must have read the tip dozens of times, so why did I never bother trying it until now? Making chainmail is much easier if you open all your rings first.
Especially since I don't use the "connect clusters of five rings" method (I'm a wuss; I haven't stepped beyond the 4-in-1 zone), but instead put on the rings one by one after the initial 3-ring-wide row. Opening all my rings first eliminates the time it takes to set down, pick up, and re-align my mail every darn single time I add a ring.
When I think of all the extra time I could've had...

Also...re-did my KA "horse whispering" icon (see this post) and made myself a new default. Because Antonio as my default is pretty, but as I'm starting to axe icons I need a more general default to replace 'em.
