I've updated No. 9 Duane Street at last!

I've been neglecting the site for far too long; my schedule kept getting in the way. Still, I was sitting on some very interesting bits of research and finally decided to knuckle down and get them posted.

In particular, Sampler's gone through and compiled some stats from the 1900 federal census (I've put up the data on nationalities, but still need to process the occupation and age info).

Also, whatever became of the Elizabeth Home for Girls (the girls' lodging house) has long been a mystery for me...I had some guesses from tiny clues sprinkled here and there in news articles and the like, but no real confirmation. But now it's official: not only is the building still standing, it's recently been declared a landmark! That makes three of the circa-1899 LHs that still exist, two of which are landmarks to boot.

Stuff I rescued from my old, old magazine stash, as I'm in the process of purging it:

Christian Bale in Treasure Island, original broadcast, 1/21/1990

TV Guide pic/blurb on Roundhouse for the new fall season, 9/12/1992

Somewhere I've got a TV guide pic of Luke Edwards in I Know My First Name. That issue I did save on purpose, but only because I was a Corin Nemec fan.

Updates at No. 9 Duane Street, too minor to warrant an announcement on other forums.

But I'll mention them here, because they're interesting:

  • A note about one of the entertainment options, the Windsor Theatre.

  • Nationalities of lodging boys.

  • Dog incident no. 2: Carlo and the aforementioned Windsor Theatre.

Rescued an old 1999 TV Guide article from the to-toss box. Pure luck I had saved that issue; I don't think I really even knew who Christian Bale was at the time.

I put the whole thing up at [livejournal.com profile] bale_daily here.

Argh! What's the point of me taking detailed notes for No. 9 if I'm just going to up and lose them before I can get them entered?

Been off-line again for a couple of weeks due to RL issues...Hope everyone on my f'list is well! I've missed you all.

Third and possibly final shadow box game in this series, all of which are inspired by Newsies. This is my most complex box to date as I had to almost completely dismantle and re-design it, because my first attempt needed some adjustments that didn't become apparent until I'd gotten the thing all assembled and found out that the small margins of error were just enough to make it not work properly.

Anyway, this box can be played in two modes, one of which is a game (since it has a goal) and the other simply a desktop toy. It's named for "Carrying the Banner," the first big musical number in the movie. (If you're not familiar with the song, it's a cheerfully cynical rundown of penniless life in 1899 New York.)

It's a fine life... )

I just scrapped nearly everything I'd done so far on my third shadow box game. The basic idea is sound but that specific design was just too difficult to implement, and I've spent way too much time trying different options to salvage it when I had other things I, er, really ought to have been doing instead.

Curse you, Time, you win this round!

Added little metal-rimmed "button" plaques to both of my Newsies shadow box games.

This is a companion piece to my first shadow box game. This time around it's still Newsies, with a focus on a different part of turn of the century New York.

I was wondering: How to combine my love of shadowboxes, self-contained wooden games, old New York, and Newsies?

So I made this.

It's essentially a customized version of... )

I got a brief note the other day from the Reference desk at an Indiana library, thanking me for No. 9 Duane Street as it helped some students write their assignments. That was nice.
