ldhenson: (spider-man (from cap by oxoniensis))
So I finally got around to watching the first Spider-Man. More or less the same verdict that I had for 2: enjoyable and fun, but am not quite sure what the huge fuss is all about. I've really enjoyed some of Sam Raimi's work in the past (especially The Quick and the Dead) but good lord, if I thought some of the scene transitions are S-M2 are awkward, there are some awkward ones in the first.

(OTOH, I was pleasantly surprised by how attractive both Kirsten Dunst and James Franco are in the first movie, leading me to think they must've gotten on the hairdresser's bad side in the second. How anyone can manage to de-beautify Dunst is beyond me.)

I will say this, however:

Tobey Maguire's screen test is hands down the highlight of the entire 2-DVD set, and that includes the movie itself. Why they didn't include a scene like this in the movie, when they obviously had a star whose physique was up to the task, is far, far beyond me.

Oh, all right. There's no doubt I'm being extremely shallow about this. (Particularly because, oh sure, I'm not sure how one would work it into the plot.) But if your star's got it, flaunt it, I say. Surely there's got to be some way to flaunt it wisely?

Speaking of TQ&TD, I nearly picked up the DVD of The Sum of Us today. Seems like not too many years ago when I was vainly scouring places just for the video, and Russell Crowe was "Russell who?" to the general populace, at least on this side of the globe. I eventually had to get someone in OZ to send me a tape, converted to NTSC (alongside Proof (which I'd already seen but had no decent copy of--but absolutely needed, since this was the movie that made me a fan) and Romper Stomper (new to me, and quite the shock)).

Now his early stuff is out on DVD, and he's winning Oscars and everything...I'm so pleased.
