Yahoo!'s movies guy, Greg Dean Schmitz, slags Depp's accent in From Hell. He doesn't give any reasons, just states that Depp's hoping to do a better job with his accent in Neverland. I'm no expert on accents (my love of Britcoms notwithstanding)...is Abberline's accent really that bad? I suppose it sounded all right to me, and the directors' commentary states that the resident dialect coach thought so too.

(To give Mr. Schmidt the benefit of the doubt I have to say I'm not entirely sure whether he doesn't think Johhny did a good job or if he's saying Depp himself holds that opinion. The wording's a bit iffy.)

Continuing in the...vein...of FH, I caught a bit of it again while flipping through channels the other day. How come I never noticed before how lovely some of the score is, at least during the scene in the gallery? (Rhetorical question I know: I was too busy watching the movie through my fingers.) I'm going to have to track down the soundtrack.

Wandered in because I saw your icons erm... somewhere (sorry - goldfish memory) very nice work ;-D

I truly adore Johnny but I have to say his accent in From Hell is that bad! It's severly wierd, I asume he was going for an east end/cockney accent not sure but it didn't work. Mind you I've heard worse (Don Cheadle in Ocean's 11 springs to mind) and after the 1st few minutes you can ignore it, his acting is good enough to overcome the dodgy accent.

From the trailer to Neverland looks like the accent is much better this time... at least it doesn't sound obviously bad but then again I'm not scottish ;P

Thanks, glad you like the icons!

So no props to Johnny for the accent in FH, eh? The directors were so effusive in their commentary. And to think I used to complain about movies like The Man in the Iron Mask being sloppy with their accents. Well, guess I'll have to brush up on my listening skills then. More Stephen Fry maybe? :-)

How'd the LOTR non-UK types do with their accents?

hehehe! I'll take Johnny any day dodgy accent and all ;P

Actually the non brit LOTR tpes did well with the accents I think it helped that mostly they didn't try for any particular accent ('cept maybe Sam) but rather just tried to avoid their own American/Kiwi/Aussie accents being obvious.

And more Stephen Fry can only be a good thing, looking forward to seeing him as Sherlock Holmes ;-D

That sums it up nicely I think. So I assume his accent in POTC isn't based on anything either... :-)

What was Sam's accent?

I didn't know Fry was doing Sherlock Holmes. As a movie?
