My latest project, just for the season.

Thumbnail:

A cozy winter cottage in the woods, a perfect place to spend a warm night with loved ones.

There's a little lake by the trees for skating, if it's frozen over enough...

...and a fireplace to warm you up again afterwards.

There's a tiny decorated tree inside.

With a quarter for size comparison.
The roof is about 1 7/8" high.

I assembled this the way I usually do my 3-D paper art, all out of one continuous piece of cardstock, no adhesives, and using cutting and folding only.

Happy Holidays to one and all ♥

Love tiny tree detail, absolutely adorable.
Wish I could've gone somewhere to a cottage like this one...

Thank you! I loved making the tiny tree; it was much, much easier than cutting all the big ones!

Lovely! Amazing details, I love the little wreath pattern on the door.

I kept trying to talk myself out of the wreath since it was so tiny, but it wound up being a last-minute addition. I'm glad you like it!

How... how did you do this? WOW!!!

From: [identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com
Thank you!

It took a couple weeks to do, mostly because it's so small and the angles are very tight. I could've made it a little bigger, but since it's all in one piece, the unfolded pattern had to fit on a letter-size sheet of cardstock, and there was no arguing with that :-)

Oh, my gosh. This is so, utterly amazing! I love all that you do, but this paper cutting/folding lark...just blow my mind every time. And this one in particular. It's beautiful and cosy and perfect for the season.

Thank you very much!

I'd never really thought about doing paper art like this before, but it's been so much fun to experiment with. I'm glad people are enjoying them :-)

You mean with little folded objects on them? I imagine it'd be extremely difficult but very interesting.

I've seen a few of your posts in this community, and you never fail to impress. You create these little scenes, and I could not imagine ever being as successful at this type of paper craft as you.

Thanks for the kind words! But hey, I'm pretty new to this myself and just teaching myself as I go, so you never know :-)

Phenomenal. Again. As always.

Just out of curiosity, what do you do with all your little paper sculptures?

Thanks so much!

Right now they're all sitting on my bookshelf (it's a good thing they're small), except the elephant and the Inception totems, which take turns atop my monitor.

I really don't know what to do with my more 2-D pieces though (like this (http://ldhenson.livejournal.com/255463.html)); they were done with plain paper and too fragile to display without frames/shadow boxes (which I don't have right now). If I were to make them today I'd use cardstock and they'd be fine...ah well, live and learn.

I've also had a few requests for duplicates of some of these, which will probably happen after the new year.

This is sweet especially seen with the quarter for comparison. So much detail in such a small space.

I have to agree - i didn't realize the scale until I saw the quarter , which makes this work all the more outstanding.

Thanks very much! I have to get it all to fit on a 8.5" x 11" sheet, which means the more detailed a design gets the smaller it has to be. The silhouettes of the large trees were the hardest things to cut; knives and scissors don't naturally want to make those tiny curves, as I found out!

Thank you! Since I cut it out all in one piece, the size is dictated by my cardstock, which is letter-size. It's an interesting challenge to make everything fit.

Hmmm, I dunno, I thought it might be nice to put a candle in the house to light it up, but that's a big NO, since fire and small paper thighs don't go together. So I went to a lamp idea. You could use a led instead of a candle actually...

Oh I see, nice idea. I'd love to see it lit up from the inside as well. It's so small it's hard to get anything to fit in there, especially with the little Christmas tree. It would be fun to experiment with though! Hmmm...

Leds can be really small, so it should be feasible, and also, next house can be made a bit bigger having that as aim. Also I'd see the little christmas tree, it's soooo cute! I like the relief in the roof panes too.

From: [identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com
The roof texture was one of the last-minute additions so I'm glad you like it!

Unfortunately I can't make the house any bigger without losing the trees on the sides, unless I start with a larger blank piece of cardstock (this was letter-size). But I do have an idea now for temporarily getting the interior lit up. I wouldn't be able to display it that way, but I'd at least get a neat photo.

WOAH. WOAH. WOAH. BUT THERE'S A DECORATED CHRISTMAS TREE INSIDE.
...*dies*
How on Earth do you come up with these ideas? And execute it all so perfectly? You astound me. :D

Thanks so much! A lot of times the details come to me piecemeal...my starting ideas are usually much simpler. For this one the little Xmas tree came pretty late in the game, when I thought, "Hey, is the house big enough for...?" And it was, only just barely, but that's good enough for me :-)

From your Inception piece (the one with the two linked totems) I've been clicking through your "study in paper" tag, and I am so impressed, charmed and delighted by your work. It's amazing.
