A Study in Paper #8: FOR SCIENCE!

Yeah, I don't even know.

Thumbnail:

Just for scale, my knife there in the last pic is 5.25".

The usual paper-cutting parameters: cut all as one piece (from cardstock) and then folded; no adhesives; cutting and folding only.

Also, somebody please send help.

Maybe a stoopid question, but how would one go about storing these? It's paper and it's delicate, not to mention it'd get dusty and stuff. Glass box?

My cuttings are mostly in my bookshelf, which is covered on top and two sides but dust gest in eventually. Glass box sounds like a good idea, if they were affordable :-) Right now I just gently brush the dust away from time to time and they're fine.

John is SO John.

I am slightly at a loss at to how this relates to the original flat piece of paper it began life as (if that makes any sense?), but that actually makes it a fascinating puzzle in addition to hilarious and awesome.

Also, I have the correct icon for this one.

Incidentally, I've begun playing with papercutting myself - currently words, but mostly I am discovering how a) I need more practice, and b) that I need a knife with a much smaller point - I find I want to hold it very close to the tip, which is a terrible idea with a plan exacto... Yours looks more suited to the purpose.

Thank you! You're right, figuring out how to "lift" Sherlock from the surface of the slide, while still keeping enough paper together to assemble the slide itself, was definitely a challenge. To my surprise John proved just as difficult, but for other reasons.

Yay for more paper-cutting! Interestingly I'm used to holding my knife pretty high up. Never really thought about it before, but I suppose that how it's turned out. The knife in the pic was an Xmas gift, and the tiny blade is nice for tight curves. I swap between it and my sliding exacto's depending on which feels more comfortable. It's different for everyone, I guess. Are you going to post your cuttings?

Wow. Sherlock's legs are so neat and as always I can't believe it's from one piece of paper.

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
It took a couple drafts to figure out a technique for his legs and I'm really happy how that turned out, so I'm glad you like. Thanks!

I just snorted scorchingly hot tea and still kept on grinning.

Aw thank you!

This is really wonderful! How you can visualize how it will look in 3 dimensions while working in 2 is amazing...and all the detail you get in is simply fantastic. :D

[identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com 2011-02-16 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
It did take a few drafts to work out some of it, like Sherlock and the slide, both of which are more or less trying to occupy the same section of paper. And I'm all about the details, so thank you!

Thank you!

Looking after Sherlock is a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it.

My god. I've said it before, I'll say it again. You're my hero. Do you ever sell these?

Thanks very much!

Because of how complex some of them are, I've so far made only one of them (http://ldhenson.livejournal.com/269912.html) available, but people are always welcome to pm me.
