INT.--7-11, AT THE SLURPEE MACHINE
TASTANAGI
...and so, they've given us a week to get them several dozen
super-sized crates of Rold Gold, see? That's why we want to hire
you.
CHRIS
You want us to protect your place, huh? Stand firm at the gates,
defend your innocent way of life from roving packs of thugs
the law can't touch, right?
TASTANAGI
No, we just want you to move the crates. There's, like, fifty of
them.
CHRIS
But...did you see us at Walgreens? We cleared those bastards out.
VIN
Ran 'em off.
CHRIS
Sent 'em packing.
Tastanagi and Eban exchange looks.
TASTANAGI
Well...
Behind Chris' and Vin's backs, Nathan frantically waves his arms and
mouths the word 'NO.'
CHRIS
Please?
TASTANAGI
(reluctantly)
Oh, all right.
CHRIS
How many of these Ghosts are there?
TASTANAGI
Would twenty men scare you?
CHRIS
Twenty, no. Nineteen, yes.
Everyone surreptitiously edges a little away from Chris.
Nathan WHISPERS to Tastanagi and Eban.
NATHAN
You did see what these two did to my store, right?
EBAN
Yes, but we're desperate.
NATHAN
(resigned)
I figure if you men are going to be wreaking havoc on people's shops,
I might as well stick around.
Chris slants a look at Vin.
VIN
Hell, I wasn't planning on dyin' with a broom in my hand anyway.
CHRIS
All right.
(to Tastanagi and Eban)
Tomorrow afternoon, then.
VIN
Now, a mop, maybe...
Tastanagi and Eban beat a HASTY RETREAT.
EBAN
We cannot put our trust in them.
TASTANAGI
You're telling me?
INT.--MOTEL 6 ROOM
BUCK WILMINGTON, tall and charming, is in a happy clinch with a
WOMAN. They're smoochin'.
Suddenly, there's a POUNDING AT THE DOOR.
VIN
(v.o.)
Hey, you in there with my wife?!
BUCK
Nope!
VIN
(v.o.)
Oh.
EXT.--MOTEL 6, BACK WINDOWS
Chris is leaning against a post, patiently waiting.
CHRIS
What the...? What're you doing back out here?
VIN
He says he ain't in there.
Chris takes his shoulders and gently turns him back around.
CHRIS
Get back in there and do it again. And this time, ignore anything he
says, okay?
VIN
Okay.
Vin leaves. Chris waits.
Buck clambers through the opened back window and sits down to finish
putting his boots on.
CHRIS
Huh. Thought that'd be more dramatic, somehow.
BUCK
(shrugging)
Sorry, it's a one-floor motel.
He JUMPS UP, does a pratfall, grabs Chris in a bear hug, laughs like
a loon, then quiets down again.
BUCK
(continued)
There. Dramatic enough for you?
CHRIS
It'll do. Got a job. You interested?
BUCK
How're the odds?
CHRIS
Six...seven to one.
BUCK
You get more men, you can get it down to three or four to one.
CHRIS
Oh. Right. Uh, I knew that.
Vin joins them. He and Chris look at Buck expectantly.
BUCK
What?
CHRIS
Stranger walks over, you're not going to ask if he's with me?
BUCK
(sarcastically)
What, because I'm blind, right? He wedges hisself unsubtly into that
eensy space 'tween you and the post and I'm supposed to ask if he's
with you?
(off their blank looks)
You didn't notice?
VIN
Notice what?
BUCK
Never mind. So, there going to be ladies where you're going?
CHRIS
I imagine so.
BUCK
There going to be pencil sharpeners where you're going?
CHRIS
I imagine so.
BUCK
There going to be popcorn where you're going?
CHRIS
I imagine so...
EXT.--BROKEN-DOWN STOREFRONT ACROSS THE STREET
JOSIAH SANCHEZ is there, keeping Home Depot in business.
JOSIAH
Seems to me a man ought to put his own house in order first.
NATHAN
Yeah, but that ain't no house. You're renovating the Chapel O' Love.
JOSIAH
Man's gotta make a living, brother.
NATHAN
Aww, c'mon, Josiah.
(lower)
I need someone else sane with this bunch. Please?
JOSIAH
No.
NATHAN
