Help me, I can't stop making TG things.

My latest bit of stitchery:

top gear cushion

I'd actually been meaning to do this one for a while, and had in fact gotten as far as figuring out the pattern pieces when the idea to make a plush Oliver came along and I wound up doing that instead. But after I finished that and a couple other things I was supposed to be stitching, I finally sat down and made this.

It keeps me company when I watch TV. Alternatively, I can hold it up in front of the screen and pretend TG is on (guess who doesn't get BBC America anymore...sob...)

Thanks! I wanted something stylistically simple for TG. Of course then I went and made a whole complicated car, but I did return to this eventually :-)

Not sure yet...if I do make more, I'd scale it up to about 16" wide and it'd probably go for about $20 plus packaging/shipping. I'm also putting together a pattern. If you're interested in either one, let me know.

please tell me you will now sew me a life-size Stig. i LOVE this pillow, it's just amazing and quirky and wonderful. great details!

From: [identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com
Haha, I doubt the Stig will stand still long enough to let himself be measured.

Glad you like the pillow. Speaking of details, you can't really see it in the photos, but the gear on the back is actually stitched in two colors of thread, one light and one dark. Halfway around the gear, the colors switch. It's very subtle but livens up the design somehow!

Love it! Can you tell me a bit about your process? Specifically, how do you get the felt pieces to stay in place and not wander as you hand sew? I've made similar projects and mine never look so great!

Date: 2008-09-05 05:14 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] fabunobo.livejournal.com
PS I've thought about gluing first then sewing.

Date: 2008-09-06 01:48 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ldhenson.livejournal.com
That's it, gluing before sewing. With some patterns you can get away with the pieces shifting a little bit, but for this one it had to be exact or the pattern wouldn't work. The tricky part is the very narrow bits, where if you don't glue them down they tend to move, but if you use too much glue, you have a hard time getting the needle through it and you run the risk of tearing/stretching the thin pieces of felt as you push the needle.

Glad you like the cushion!

Thank you!

Some say he shouldn't be dry-cleaned, and that he's made of 100% acrylic. All we know is...he's the plush Stig.

Nooo...stop giving me more ideas...

I have no idea who these people/characters are, but I think that pillow is really really cool regardless. I love how you've managed to form the silhouettes from three different bands of fabric. Just awesome!

Thanks very much! Those three are the hosts of Top Gear, a fantastic show that's ostensibly about cars but is great entertainment to boot. The general look of the cushion was inspired by the opening credits (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOdOk6pTiHY) (Youtube link). (The video goes black for about 5 seconds halfway in, but that's just because in a normal broadcast that gap would be used for clips from that night's episode.)
